TfL have released their latest thinking on improving cross-river transport links in East London (pdf download). The ever-excellent London Reconnections have supplied an excellent summary of the report here.
This is a subject which we've covered at length in earlier posts, focussing on the potential for a Rotherhithe - Canary Wharf foot and cycle bridge. However, on this project, TfL are unwilling to fund further. Despite the support of both Southwark, Tower Hamlets, and Sustrans, TfL states the following:
"It is recommended that means of increasing awareness and use of the existing ferry service are taken forward, in particular to reduce demand for one-stop journeys on the Jubilee line from Canada Water to Canary Wharf. Proposals for a fixed link should be considered for the long term if third party funding sources can be secured."
Disappointing, but understandable given the scale of the financial problems facing TfL currently.
