Transport Briefing reports that TfL have brought forward preliminary works for the next stage of the East London Railway Project, which would eventually link Surrey Quays to Clapham Junction, via Peckham.
A Balfour Beatty/Carillion joint venture is currently constructing phase one of the ELL project, which will link Dalston Junction with New Cross, Crystal Palace and West Croydon in 2010. The link between Dalston Junction and Highbury and Islington is expected to open the following year.
Earlier this month (16 July) Mayor of London Boris Johnson told the London Assembly that he had met with Secretary of State for Transport Ruth Kelly to discuss funding for ELL phase two and had set out in detail the benefits of delivering the project by December 2011. He said he was hopeful that a positive conclusion to the negotiations could be reached shortly.
If signed off, this project would be of huge benefit to Londoners, providing direct routes across the city which would shave considerable time of existing routes and adding significant capacity to the network.
