Stikes Called Off

Various sources report that the recently announced tube strikes have now been called off following meetings between TfL and the unions reached agreement on safety and staffing issues.

Reports Hemscott:

The RMT said LUL had agreed to stop using agency staff and had frozen plans to close or reduce the opening times of ticket offices. The union also reached agreement on the status of staff at Heathrow's Terminal 5, on safety standards for all station staff and on the transfer of jobs for signallers.

This is excellent news for Londoners, and likely a boon to Ken Livingstone who was facing the prospect of difficult to explain tube strikes just before the Mayoral election.

However, this silver-lining does come with a requisite cloud: last night hundreds of commuters were stranded on the Jubilee Line, some for over two hours, after an unexplained power failure.
