The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has hit out at several London boroughs who are changing the rules governing loading and unloading without consulting operators. The row surrounds the enforcement of the pre-11am/post-6.30pm unlimited kerbside access that operators have previously relied on to complete deliveries. It means that a vehicle can park on double yellow lines in order to complete a delivery without risk of a fine.
This site has long argued that we need a joined-up strategy in London for freight deliveries. The current system puts enormous strain on certain routes where traffic is slowed almost to a halt due to delivery schedules. All of the Mayoral candidates should be looking at methods to better get essential deliveries to the points where they are needed. As this site has stressed before, much energy and effort could be saved by a well planned containerisation method.
