It closed just over 10 years ago, but now it looks like the public may soon be able to visit the London Post Office Railway (or Mail Rail) as plans have emerged to re-open it as a tourist attraction. Proposals submitted to Islington Council would see visitors descend below Mount Pleasant and ride a section of the route. Other elements of the plan include a 'family zone', museum and hireable events space. The BBC have a good summary of the Mail Rail and the plans for the museum.
It's great to see London's underbelly opened up like this - there's so much rich history under our feet and it is a shame when it goes unnoticed. Speaking of which, a few recent tweets from The Old London Underground Company suggest that it continues to move closer to operation.
Good times for those of us who are fascinated by the ground beneath our feet.
