Brian Paddick, former deputy assistant commissioner at the Met, has been selected as Lib Dem candidate for Mayor in a ballot of party members, reports the BBC.
He said "less crime, better transport, cleaner air and fewer Londoners living in poverty" was crucial for the city.
Mr Paddick's selection clarifies the dynamics of the race, with him facing off against the incumbent Labour candidate, Ken Livingstone, the Conservative candidate, Boris Johnson, and Sian Berry fighting for the Greens.
