The BBC carries an amusing story about the launch of Grand Central trains, which are due to operate on the old GNER route from London to Sunderland. Behind the humour however, are serious issues about the way in which the market is constrained for new entrants in Britain today. Grand Central is delayed due to the blocking policies of GNER and antiquated systems which the rail industry is forced to work within. For real competition and choice in the rail market, the Government needs to address the system to make it easier for entrepreneurs to enter the fray.
