Transport Briefing carries the story that Ken Livingstone has been granted powers to determine major planning applications as the Greater London Authority Act 2007 received Royal Assent yesterday. The Act "...will strengthen the Mayor's ability to shape planning, housing and waste policy and to link developments to his existing areas of jurisdiction, such as transport. He also gains powers to decide planning applications of strategic importance to the capital.
"In addition, the legislation subjects the London Assembly to a duty to address climate change and gives the legislators power to scrutinise Livingstone's choices for key appointments."
LondonUnlocked strongly favours both strands of this legislation - for too long a fully accountable system of checks and balances has been missing in the GLA - we hope that the legislation will get Londoners better value, and lead to better decisions being made.
